As the number of coronavirus cases surges in Florida, more than 7,000 people have signed an online petition urging Disney and government officials to reconsider the opening of Disney World next month.

Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom are scheduled to open first, on July 11th. Epcot and Hollywood Studios will follow on July 15th. With current re-opening plans, visitors and employees will be required to wear face masks and undergo temperature checks prior to entering the park.

Disneyland announced on Wednesday that it would delay its scheduled reopening in July. In Orlando, competitor, Universal Studios has reopened its parks.

For the second consecutive day, Florida has reported more than 5,000 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the state. In total, the state has reported more than 114,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and at least 3,327 coronavirus-related deaths. Gov. Ron DeSantis says people can avoid spreading the virus by wearing masks, along with avoiding big crowds and not being within close quarters to lots of other people indoors. He also added that many of the new cases are in younger, healthier people.
